Spraoi Festival 2024: A Spectacle of Street Arts and Imaginatio

As summer approaches, the anticipation for the Spraoi International Street Arts Festival in Waterford, Ireland, reaches its peak. Celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere and dazzling performances, the 2024 edition of Spraoi promises to be an unforgettable event. From August 2nd to 4th, the city will transform into a stage for a myriad of performers and curious creatures, delighting audiences of all ages.

The Parade: A Cavalcade of Curious Creatures

This year’s highlight is undoubtedly the Spraoi Parade, taking place on Sunday, August 4th. Starting at 9:30 p.m. from Johnstown and culminating at the Quays around 10:45 p.m., the parade features nearly 200 performers and an array of exquisitely crafted puppets and floats. The theme, “Cavalcade of Curious Creatures,” is brought to life by the enigmatic Madam Cavalcade. She has scoured the globe, assembling a menagerie of mythological beasts and strange hybrids for her infamous travelling show. Expect to see flying crocodiles, fiery dragons, and even airborne pigs!

Madam C., steering her renowned steam contraption, hopes her creatures won’t cause too much chaos as they make their way through Waterford. This grand spectacle will be followed by a breathtaking fireworks display launched from the River Suir, making it a night to remember.

Street Performances: A Citywide Celebration

For three days, Waterford’s medieval streets, squares, and quays will become the stage for street performances that captivate and energize. Hundreds of performers from around the world will showcase their talents, turning the city into a vibrant, living theatre. From acrobatics and dance to music and theatre, the variety of acts ensures there’s something for everyone.

One of the standout performers this year is Motionhouse, a UK-based dance company celebrating its 30th anniversary. Their performance, “Captive,” inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “The Panther,” combines dance, acrobatics, and aerial work inside a large cage. This emotionally charged piece explores themes of captivity and survival, promising to leave audiences spellbound.

A Warm Welcome to All

Spraoi Festival 2024 is not just a local celebration; it’s an international event that welcomes performers and audiences from around the globe. This year, the festival will host DIVE#3, an event organized in collaboration with Circostrada, Europe’s leading network for circus and street performance practitioners. Delegates and programmers from across Europe will gather in Waterford, adding an exciting dimension to the festival.
